My Chemical Romance adalah band rock alternatif Amerika dari New Jersey, yang dibentuk pada tahun 2001. Band ini terdiri dari vokalis Gerard Way timbal, gitaris Ray Toro dan Frank Iero, dan bassist Mikey Way dan memiliki unsur-unsur suara yang beragam menggabungkan rock gothic, punk, emo, glam metal, dan rock progresif. Tak lama setelah membentuk, band ini menandatangani kontrak dengan Eyeball Records dan merilis album debut mereka, saya Mewujudkan Anda Bullets saya, Anda Mewujudkan Me Your Love pada tahun 2002. Lagu yang berasal dari album kedua mereka THREE CHEERS FOR SWEET REVENGE ini, ternyata mempunyai fakta yang menarik dan makna yang cukup menyentuh di dalamnya. Diakui Gerard Way (vokalis MCR), Lagu ini adaLah Lagu yang paling penting di album sophomore mereka.
HELENA merupakan lagu penghargaan yang sengaja dibuat untuk nenek Gerard dan Mickey Way (Gitaris MCR). Mereka berdua mengakui, bahwa nenek mereka sangat berarti. neneknya yang mengajari Gerard cara menggambar, melukis, dan bernyanyi, dan si nenek juga membelikannya mobil pertama - van putih - yang terlihat di video "im not okay( i promise)"
Nama sang nenek adalah ELENA. Itu juga yang menjadi dasar dari judul Lagu ini.
Saking pentingnya Lagu ini untuk Gerard, bahkan pada saat proses pembuatan videoklipnya, Gerard sempat nangis, sampai akhirnya dia memutuskan untuk keluar dari ruangan tempat syuting. Karena menurutnya Lagu itu terlalu emosional.

Sepanjang Warped Tour 2005, Gerard memperkenalkan lagu ini sebagai yang paling penting lagu untuk dirinya dan bandnya.

Sebelum memainkan lagu ini selama tur mereka 2005 Amerika, Gerard Way akan memberitahu penontonnya dan melihat ke atas sambil berkata, "Hei grandma! What's Up?"

Sama seperti judulnya, lagu ini bercerita tentang seorang pasien yang menderita penyakit kanker. Lirik daLam Lagu ini diceritakan dari perspektif sang pasien. 
Pasien ini sedang merasakan sakit yang luar biasa (dan lagi-lagi hampir mati), akibat penyakit yang dideritanya. Tapi, yang lebih membuatnya sakit lagi, saat dia memikirkan bagaimana perasaan orang-orang dekat yang akan ditinggalnya.
Bait demi bait lirik lagu ini benar-benar meggambarkan sakit yang diderita oleh sang pasien. MuLai dari rambut rontok akibat kanker, efek dari chemo therapy, sampai sakit hati yang dirasakan.

Lagu ini mungkin jelas bercerita tentang perasaan takut kehilangan seseorang yang penting di hidup kita. Misalnya, pasangan hidup, atau keluarga.
Menurut Gerard, kehilangan seseorang yang penting bisa membuat hidup kita berubah. Gerard juga mengatakan bahwa di Lagu ini, bukan hanya kehilangan pasangan hidup yang diceritakan. Selain keluarga, bisa juga kehilangan sahabat atau teman-teman. Intinya, Lagu ini bercerita tentang kehilangan orang yang penting dihidup kita.

Menjadi sangat menarik untuk sekedar melihat salah satu lagu My Chemical Romance yang berjudul I’m Not Okay. Kita bisa melihat sisi menariknya apabila kita cermati isi lirik dan musiknya. Dari sisi lirik kita akan mendapati bahwa sejumlah ekspresi ketidak”ok”an dapat menjadi cermin kondisi kalangan muda sekarang yang sering terjebak dalam keadaan yang serba tidak enak.

Misalnya saja dalam kasus nyata bunuh diri lompat dari gedung yang belakangan ini marak terjadi, dalam lagu tersebut digambarkan patahnya kaki karena lompat dari lantai dua. Mengapa lompat karena tidak okay (tidak dalam keadaan nyaman), misalnya saja disebabkan foto porno yang diambil oleh sang pacar (the dirty looks). Semua itu membawa pada keadaan yang tidak okay.

Secara umum lagu tersebut menggambarkan tentang pemanfaatan manusia yang satu oleh manusia yang lain, sebuah fenomena klasik yang membuat ada pihak yang dirugikan. Namun kemudian kembali disegarkan dengan gaya musik menghentak namun cukup mendayu-dayu yang menyebabkan pendengarnya bisa larut dalam suasana yang abu-abu menuju gelap, apalagi gaya pemusiknya memang agak kegelapan dengan nuansa gothik yang misterius.
